The structure of a successful CV for applying abroad
"How do I write a CV for university applications?"
Submitting a curriculum vitae ("CV" or "Resume") is a common requirement when applying to university abroad, although not mandatory for undergraduate programmes. If you apply in the Netherlands, they will probably ask you to send a CV. For other European countries, the US and Canada, it depends more on the university or programme. Older and more reputable institutes often ask for a CV. Most do not. And for some it is not a required element, but if the applicant wants it, they can attach it to their other documents. In this scenario, I advise you to submit a CV. Even if you don't have extensive previous experience, the good CV is a great way to showcase your strengths, achievements and skills, especially if not everything has been mentioned or explained qualitatively in the cover letter and recommendation.
What does the structure of a good CV for university abroad look like?
1. Header: include your full name and contact information here such as email and phone number.
2. Personal statement (optional): a short (2-3 sentences), personalised statement explaining why you are applying to university and what you hope to achieve
3. Education: memories of the schools and colleges you attended, in chronological order from current to oldest
4. Extracurricular activities: list clubs, sports, community service or any volunteer work you've done
5. Work experience (if applicable): if you have any work experience, however brief - include it. List any part-time jobs, internships or summer programs.
6. SkillsA: Here you can mention all the relevant skills you have acquired over the years - proficiency in some software, spoken languages, playing musical instruments, fine arts, photography, etc.
7. Honours and Awards: list any relevant awards, academic achievements, scholarships or recognitions you have received
