Applying abroad - an action plan

Do you dream of studying abroad but don't know where and when to start? You are not alone!

Preparing for higher education abroad can seem confusing, but with the right application plan you can achieve your dream more easily. In this article you will find structured action plan, as well as key tips on choosing a university, specialisation and preparing your documents. All of this has been prepared to help you find your way through the application process abroad more easily.

1. Choice of university and specialisation

When choosing your future specialisation, it is important to consider the following aspects:

  • 🎓What do I enjoy learning? - Do you prefer theory or practice? Do you like to study alone or in a group? Exact science, abstract concepts or creative projects? It may sound funny, but many candidates choose a particular major because they believe it will give them good career prospects, because their parents approve, or because their friends will apply for the same. Too often, however, they don't realise exactly what is being studied in that major. For example, I have had a case where the applicant had interrupted her BA in Psychology and was reapplying for something else. She loved psychology and wanted to unravel the human psyche, but she didn't realize how much statistical analysis was involved, and that didn't appeal to her. To make sure it doesn't happen to you, make sure the program you choose appeals to you not only as an end goal, but also as a process and subjects of study.

  • 🎯What do I want to work on? - There is also the opposite problem, when candidates choose a specialisation just because they like the subjects they study, but in fact later turn out to be unaware of their professional prospects. Make sure you know in advance what professions your chosen programme offers so you don't wonder how to retrain later.

  • 🌍What language do I want to learn? - This will largely determine the countries and specialities you can apply for.

  • 💶What budget can I afford? - The financial issue is very important. As you probably already know, in some countries education is free and others require hefty fees. Some offer funding for students from the state itself, others offer student loans. In some universities, scholarships are more generous than others. Research all this beforehand and apply where the financial conditions suit you and your family best.

2. Input requirements

Once you are clear on your educational goals, research the entry requirements. These will certainly include following:

    • ✍️ Cover letter
    • 📜 Recommendation (or two) from a teacher
    • 🌐 Language certificate
    • 🧾Translated transcript if you have not graduated yet, or translated and legalized diploma if you have graduated already

Additional entry requirements depend on the chosen specialisation or country and may include one or more of the following:

    • 📄CV
    • 📝Ese
    • 🎨Art portfolio (for fine art, fashion, architecture, graphic and other design, photography, etc.)
    • 🎤Audition (for music and performing arts)
    • 💬Interview
    • 🌐Second language certificate (for bilingual majors)
    • 🧮Other exams (for some engineering specialty, mathematics, law, etc.)
