Academic guidance for prospective students abroad

What does a strong recommendation from a faculty member involve?

A recommendation from a teacher, called a "Letter of Reference", is an integral and important part of applying to university abroad. Admissions officers use it to get to know you better as it offers an external a credible assessment of your academic and personal qualities. A good recommendation can often tip the scales in your favour, especially when your academic results are similar to other candidates.

Structure of the strong recommendation

Here is the structure of a good recommendation, which should preferably be long one to two printed pages:

1. Official greeting: The recommendation should begin with a formal greeting such as "Dear Admissions Committee" or "To Whom It May Concern." If the name of the person receiving the letter is known, let it be mentioned.

2. Introduction: It starts with an introduction of the teacher and his/her relationship with the student. Mention should be made of the subject he or she teaches and since when he or she has been a teacher.

3. The student's academic abilities: It should be mentioned The student's academic performance, including strengths in class, dedication and ability to understand and apply concepts, etc.

4. Personal qualitiesA: The qualities beyond academia should also be mentioned. Is the student hardworking, motivated, compassionate or a strong leader?

5. Specific examplesA: Advantage is the use of concrete examples to demonstrate student ability, character, and growth. For example, describing a specific project in which he excelled, or how he overcame challenges.

6. Why it is suitable for universityA: The qualities of the student should be linked to their potential success at the chosen university: how prepared they are for the academic and social challenges ahead and why the teacher thinks this particular candidate would be great for the programme/university.

7. ConclusionA: The recommendation should be concluded just like that - with a recommendation. Let the teacher declare his strong support for the student by assuring the reader of his potential and ability.

8. Signature: A signature should follow at the end as well as the teacher's full name, title, school name and contact information (phone and/or email address).
